I was expecting to detest this movie, and I'm happy to say that I foundsome enjoyment in We Are Your Friends. I'm not too big on EDM; I lovesome of it, dislike most of it, but this movie actually painted thegenre/scene in an interesting light. They add a human element to theotherwise processed and compressed music, and it's pretty captivating.At least those scenes are. Where the movie fails can be attributed toits title. We Are Your Friends shouldn't have been about friendship orhaving each others backs or whatever they were trying to go for becausethat is by far the weakest element of the movie. Zac Efron is great inthe lead role, but his friends are complete throwaway characters. Ididn't care about any of them. There is one scene near the end wherethe friend arc almost pays off, but even then it's not worth all thewasted minutes building up these characters when there's a far moreinteresting story that's going to waste.
The story I'm referring to involves Wes Bentley's character James whois a washed up DJ that kind of fell from grace and is now living offroyalty checks and he ends up being the person who teaches Cole (Efron)how to make electronic music effective. I really enjoyed Bentley inthis role. In fact, the whole trifecta of Efron, Bentley, and EmilyRatajkowski is what made the movie watchable. Bentley being the mentorcharacter who is fighting a lot of inner demons, Efron being theambitious musician who is hungry for his big break, and Ratajkowskishowing off her acting talent as the assistant/girlfriend to Bentley'scharacter who ends up falling for Efron. Even though it sounds like acliché love triangle, for some reason it works. There's tension betweenthese characters - you care about the friendship between James andCole, but you also recognize their faults and why Emily's character istorn in her position. They make for some pretty powerful scenes.
But again, this potential is muddled underneath a bunch of Hollywoodcrap. There's a throwaway plot about the gang working for a real estateagency, there's an attempt at a moral to being true to yourself inorder to make it big, there is just a bunch of predictable nonsensethat clutters this film which is a shame. Believe me, I was notexpecting to have any nice things to say about We Are Your Friends, butthere is definitely something here. The fact is that the goodness inthe movie is a diamond in the rough, and sadly, this diamond isn'tworth all the rough.

YIFY Torrents or YTS was a peer-to-peer release group known for distributing large numbers of movies as free downloads through BitTorrent. YIFY releases were characterised through their HD video quality in a small file size, which attracted many downloaders. The original YIFY/YTS website was shut down by the MPAA in 2015; however, a website imitating the YIFY/YTS brand still gains a significant amount of traffic. 'YIFY' is derived from the name of the website's founder, Yiftach Swery.[1]

YIFY Torrents was founded by Yiftach Swery in 2010, while he was studying computer science at University of Waikato.[2] Yiftach is an app developer, web developer and archery champion from Auckland, New Zealand.[3][4] The first YIFY movie releases were the result of Yiftach experimenting with the x264 video codec to encode HD movies in a way that took up as little hard drive space as possible, which were then uploaded to The Pirate Bay.[5][6] Initially, before the encoding was automated in 2014, the early YIFY releases were encoded on a ten-year old laptop sitting in his bedroom.[7] In August 2011, the YIFY brand was gaining enough traffic to warrant the launch of an official YIFY Torrents Website. The website was blocked by ISPs in the United Kingdom on December 14, 2013, so a mirror domain yify-torrents.im was launched to assist users to bypass the block.[8][9]

The YIFY name continued to generate traction, to the point where in 2013, 'YIFY' was the most searched term on Kickass Torrents, along with other related search terms such as 'yify 720p', 'yify 2013' and 'yify 1080p'.[10] This popularity was maintained through to 2015, where it was once again the most searched term on BitTorrent websites.[11] In a 2013 interview with TorrentFreak, YIFY attributed the success of his group's releases to the consistency of the information and cover art coming with the movies, as well as the small file sizes allowing for easier accessibility.[12]

In January 2014, Yiftach announced that he was retiring from encoding and uploading, mentioning that it was 'time for a change' in his life. The website rebranded to YTS, and moved to a new domain name at YTS.RE. Management and encoding was handed over to the existing team of staff members. The entire website was re-programmed at the backend and redesigned at the frontend in February 2015, as the site was dealing with an increased number of technical issues due to an increasing number of visitors (approximately one million unique visitors a day, at the time).[15]

In March 2015, The YTS staff were informed by the domain registry FRNIC that their current domain YTS.RE was frozen and would be suspended by the end of March. The cause of this suspension was unclear, although legal pressure from copyright holders was the speculated reason. By March 20, 2015, the website had been successfully moved to a new domain, YTS.TO.[16]

In October 2015, the YIFY website went down, with no word from any of the staff or those connected with the site, and no new YIFY releases. It was confirmed on October 30th 2015 that YIFY/YTS was shut down permanently.[17][18] The site was shut down due to a lawsuit coming from the MPAA.[19] They filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the website's operator, accusing him of 'facilitating and encouraging massive copyright infringement'. This news came as a surprise to some, such as a spokesman for the New Zealand Screen Association who would have expected the site to have been operating from Eastern Europe, the case with some other past websites.[20] Swery was able to settle out of court a month later, signing a non-disclosure agreement.[21] Yiftach did not resist legal action in any way, and co-operated with authorities as needed. In a 2016 Reddit AMA, Yiftach justified this saying that he never intended to 'put up a fight', and had frequently told himself “When someone asks you to stop properly, you stop”.[22][23][24]

Additionally, YIFY had a registered company in the United Kingdom, titled YTS.RE LTD, incorporated on 5 February 2015.[25] The company was based in a virtual office in London. The company was dissolved in February 2016.[26]

Legacy[edit]

Since its shutdown, the YIFY name has been used in numerous copycat websites.[27] Some of them are claiming to be the 'new' YIFY, while various others simply use the name for purposes such as streaming sites and subtitle download repositories. The most significant one of these sites were YTS.AG, which quickly climbed in popularity when the original YTS site shut down.[28][29] There has been some backlash to these imitators.[30] Kickass Torrents stated that they would only allow YTS.AG rips if they were uploaded under a different title. ExtraTorrent and RARBG banned them altogether.[31][32] In late 2017 after two years of operation,[33]YTS.AG shifted to the new domain YTS.AM,[34] and was ranked by Alexa as the 183rd most viewed website globally in April 2019.[35] The site, since gaining such a large userbase, has been blocked by ISPs in several countries, such as Greece, Australia and Ireland.[36][37][38][39]

In July 2016, the YIFY name made a cameo in season 2 of the television seriesMr. Robot, where the lead character Elliot is seen using the uTorrent client, and his Plex folder, filled with films from release groups such as RARBG and YIFY. When approached by TorrentFreak, Yiftach stated that he appreciated the 'bad ass' mention.[40]
